At approximately 10:44 p.m. EDT, members of the Quebec Legal Collective, a group of attorneys volunteering their services to protesters, arrived at the newsroom in case CMAQ personnel required legal assistance. At approximately 11:00 p.m. EDT, approximately 20 riot police fired rubber bullets down the stairs into the CMAQ foyer, injuring one activist. He suffered wounds to his leg and was treated at the scene by medics. CMAQ staff and reporters responded to the police assault by barricading the doors. By 11:06 p.m. EDT, the police retreated down Rue Cote d'Abraham to confront protesters. At 11:24 p.m. EDT, CMAQ had to block the doors with clothes and blankets to prevent tear gas -- presumably fired at the activists -- from seeping into the newsroom. At 12:57 a.m. EDT, CMAQ reporters confirmed via eyewitnesses that the Medical Center had been tear-gassed by riot police. The clinic was moved to the CMAQ building. http://quebec.indymedia.org/viewarticle.ch2?articleid=1367&language=english ~~~~~~~~~~bienvenue au canada!~~~~~~~` WHERE TO GET THE NEWS Before we begin, start here: http://www.indymedia.org - one stop source for global independant media http://www.indymedia.org/ftaa - all FTAA global coverage http://quebec.indymedia.org/ - Quebec City FTAA coverage http://www.destroyimf.org/ - global indie news & excellent articles VIOLENCE IN QUEBEC = DEMOCRACY Violence? We got it! By all reports, the Quebec riot police have been the most violent yet-- beating out Philly, Prague, Washington, Seattle and LA! Not as bad as the southern hemisphere, where far larger and more violent protests and nation-wise shut-downs have taken place without any mainstream media coverage. But before the south, the headlines: "Democracy!" screams the results of the FTAA. The Big News is that only "democracies" will be allowed to participate in all of the Free Trade Fun. What a democracy *is* is a bit difficult to grasp. According to Chretien, and Stockwell Day, the protesters are a minority who do not represent a majorty opinion, and who, furthermore, are undemocratic! Protests are not proper to a democracy-- this is the message. So obviously a democracy has these characteristics: 1. No protests, which = no free speech = no dissent. I.e. a one party, one-thought system. 2. Free trade without the hindrance of human rights except for the tag-word "democracy," which means free trade without human rights. 3. An economy run by the IMF, World Bank, ratified through agreements such as the FTAA, WTO, NAFTA, APEC; no direct representational control over the economy. So let's see. No free speech, no human rights, no self- rule over the economy=democracy! The tactic of the politicians and the corporate world is to disavow the protesters their right to democratic expression. A picture from the FTAA protests show a line of riot police approaching two activists holding a banner that says "...AND THEY CALL THIS DEMOCRACY." However, this banner no longer works if the mainstream media and the politicians DO NOT call this democracy; if they disavow these actions as democratic. It's all an Orwellian jargon- game. "Protesters" will soon become "thugs" or, better yet, "terrorists" or "anarchists." What has already happened is this: "fascism" has become "democracy." It *almost* makes you want to fall for Castro's rhetoric: --------- MESSAGE FROM FIDEL TO THE DEMONSTRATORS IN QUBEC We have just watched on television the images of the brutal manner with which the authorities of Canada are repressing the peaceful demonstrations of those that protest against the crime attempted to be committed against the political and economic rights of the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean in Quebec. It is a shame! I wish to express on behalf of the people of Cuba our sympathy and admiration for the brave and heroic behaviour of those that struggle there for such a just cause. Governments that deceive the world by calling themselves defenders of human rights treat their own people in such a way. In this manner they pretend to discharge their guilt for the millions of children, women, adults and elderly in the world that, being able to be saved, die every year of disease and hunger. Yet they will not be able to sustain the unfair order they have imposed upon human kind. We convey our fullest solidarity. Cuba supports you, embraces you and greets you with fraternity, Fidel Castro Ruz April 20, 2001 (6:00 p.m.) ----------- Good ol' Fidel. And we can pity Cuba, for it will suffer more from being excluded from the FTAA. On the other hand, who the hell would want to join? At least Cuba is honest about its one-party system. THE SOUTH AMERICAS Did you know that the supreme court of Argentina has found the IMF responsible for its debt? And that 70% of the population pinpoints the IMF as controlling the nation's budget? "The Argentine courts find the IMF directly responsible for Argentina's debt. In an unprecedented judicial ruling, condemning the illegitimate origins of the country's debt amassed during the military dictatorship of 1976-83, Judge Jorge Ballestro says that the outstanding debt is part of "a damaging economic policy that forced [Argentina] on its knees through various methods, and which tended to benefit and support private companies - national and foreign - to the detriment of society." The ruling specifically cities the IMF as being responsible and states that "it could not pass unnoticed among the IMF authorities who were supervising the economic negotiations". As the hearing concludes, more than 5,000 people gather outside the congressional building in the capital to demonstrate their support." It's all here in "States of Unrest," the World Development Movement Report: http://www.wdm.org.uk/cambriefs/DEBT/unrest.htm ------ JAGGI SINGH ARRESTED FOR NO REASON-- AGAIN http://www.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=35570&group=webcast See the people shoving the guy with the red hat into the van? Those are undercover cops, dressed like protesters, apparently "arresting" Jaggi Singh for standing around. Maybe Chretien is right: protesters aren't democratic, as it would seem that quite a few of them are actually PIGS. From Indymedia.org: The popular activist organizer was attacked by disguised policemen and whisked away. His whereabouts are now unknown A group of disguised policemen assaulted and kidnapped the non-violent activist Jaggi Singh this afternoon. His whereabouts are still unknown and no charges have been laid. About five oclock we were standing talking on rue Saint-Jean, a green [minimum risk] zone, Helene Nazon reported, when three or four demonstrators suddenly attacked Jaggi from behind. They grabbed his arms, pushed him down onto the pavement and began beating him. Jaggi shouted out and nearby protesters rushed to his rescue, she continued. One young woman was shoved to the ground and a man was kicked by the assailants, she said. When would-be rescuers appeared to have the upper hand, the assailants drew truncheons from under their coats, announced they were police and warned people away. Then they picked Jaggi up, dragged him into an unmarked panel van parked on Sainte-Claire, Nazon said, and sped away. Ms Nazon is a member of CASA [Welcoming Committee for the Summit of the Americas]. Numerous telephone inquiries to local police authorities revealed no reports of Mr Singhs arrest, location or of any charges being laid. The assailants are described as big men, bouncers, dressed up like protesters, and the attacked as completely unprovoked, and in an area designated green by the Comite populaire Saint-Jean-Baptiste [Patriotic St John the Baptist Committee]. Mr Singh is a well-known organizer and journalist who was similarly treated at the infamous APEC demonstrations in Vancouver and again in Montreal. Jaggi has never committed civil disobedience himself, Ms Nazon said. Other members of CASA condemned the brutal responses by police when the illegal barricades were earlier toppled by demonstrators. This was complete overkill, said spokesperson Louise Boivin. There is a problem when a society that calls itself democratic has to suppress legitimate dissent with pepper spray, tear gas and attack dogs, she said. At a press conference tonight spokesperson Julie-Eve Proulx reported a number of pre-emptive arrests, midnight house breakins by police and harrassments of organizers. The torchlight march we organized last night was very beautiful and completely peaceful, she said, and we can see no reason why police are acting in these extraordinary ways. The good newsis that groups that have had difficulties with each other for years, Boivin said, are now working together very effectively. These police actions certainly confirm the nature of the secret negotiations going on inside the wall, she said. Newer News: Jaggi will be released April 25th. All of this reminds me of two other infamous intellectuals: 1. Michel Foucault, arrested throughout the late 60s and early 70s in France. 2. Toni Negri, whose arrest and jail sentence in the late 1970s and 80s in Italy (for supposed involvement with the Red Brigades) was overturned years later; however, he returned to Italy only a few years ago to be thrown back in jail on further trumped up charges. Since then, he has written two books in prison, including "Insurgencies." The parallels to Antonio Gramsci, the Marxist intellectual jailed back in the 30s in Italy, is uncanny-- Gramsci's ideas of hegemony and ideology are groundbreaking in political theory, philosophy and pragmatic protest dynamics today. ----- SEX, VIRTUAL MEETINGS AND GLAMOUR: LIFE AS A CORPORATE DELEGATE Want to know what is is like to be a delegate? "Coming into Prague was impressive because they had the system all set up. Right at the airport you were accredited. As soon as you stepped out of the plane, you were fast- tracked out of customs. Everything was so systematic. Everybody got into fast track. And you got escorts. As you know, they closed all universities that week. And one reason was to get students to act as escorts and guides to delegates. For the whole week. Very good looking escorts. Extremely good looking. In fact, I dated one of them later." http://www.destroyimf.org/afterprague/action/shitscaredinprague.html And some basic advice, from the same delegate: "Because what is most significant about these meetings are the informal business parties. There were at least 15 lavish parties given by the commercial banks for the delegates. Very, very lavish. For many delegates, those were the prime events of the conference. The actual official functions were just pro forma. If I were a protester, by the way, I would have gone to these venues because they were not secured at all. These were the events that everyone went to in the evenings. These were very open venues. And they were listed in the schedule. Now, that would really have stopped the real business of the conference." -------------------- AMERICAN SCIENTISTS RULE ZE WORLD Yep, American Scientists are the best patriots ever.
